So starting a blog on the first of a new year…yeah I hear the cliche seeping from that statement as I write it haha. I get it’s not the most original start to a blog, but hey, creatives need to hit when inspiration strikes right?
Here’s the deal, I’ve never really been a fan of social media. The entire space feels crowded and uncomfortable, and most algorithms encourage a stream of negativity that I’d rather not allow myself to be exposed to. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a designer so it’s not like the concept of criticism is foreign to me (you need a thick skin if you want to survive in the industry). I’m not talking about all that, I’m talking about posts with hate and negativity being thrown in our faces because it’s what we are most likely to react to. I could honestly go on and on about that, but since this is the start of something new I’m going to try to keep it light.
So, putting my feelings about social media aside, I decided to start a blog. I’m not quite sure what I want to accomplish with this yet. I have over 10 years of industry experience I’d love to pass along to the next generation of designers, not to mention thoughts about the ever changing technology and how it impacts us as humans. Then there’s this insatiable desire to learn and create that I feel most decent designers are born with, which leads to some pretty kooky projects throughout the year that might be fun to share with the world.
I guess the real point of this blog is to do something for myself. I feel many of us (designers, Americans, heck even just the human race) have this overwhelming desire to add value to everything we do. Hobbies can’t just be hobbies, they need to feel like they’re accomplishing something. Learning a new skill can’t just be fun, it needs to have utility. Well, I’ve come to a slow realization (one I’m sure many of you have reached far sooner than I have, haha) that life doesn’t need to have any inherent value, it can just be making art or learning for its own sake.
So, welcome to my brain dump! I want to try to post new thoughts every week, though I can’t guarantee it. This is a space to write about things that excite and inspire me, both as a fellow human, and as a designer in an ever changing world.
All I have left to say is… “nice to meet you!”.
