Pool Drafter Assets

The Problem

I was heavily involved in the development of a 2D to 3D experimental CAD software called Pool Drafter. We were working on a shoestring budget, so anywhere we could save money during the development was heavily considered. As development was moving along, and investors were still being approached, we started pricing out any 3D assets we wanted to include in the base program. Since this is a 3D staging program we’d need quite a few assets, ranging from doors and windows to more complicated things like trees and bushes. With 3D modelers having such a range in design styles, our developer was pushing for us to either hire a freelance 3D modeler, or purchase all our assets from one supplier so the model styles and builds would match.

The Solution

3D models are expensive! Oh, and did I mention we were on a shoestring budget? While we were waiting for investment money to come in, I started messing around with blender to develop some placeholder assets. That’s when I fell in love with 3D modeling. It’s something I had been wanting to get into for a long time, this project just happened to provide the perfect excuse. I developed over 70 different furniture models, using popular postings from amazon as reference photos. I even developed up to 4 level of detail models for each of them to help with the processing speed of our program. We ended up using my models for our development and saved a ton of money, plus now we can develop any new models we need in house and save time.
