Soil Test Kit

The Problem

Substrata’s soil stabilization product was highly effective, and the most affordable on the market. The major issue with getting a consumer to purchase was testing their soil. Unlike several other soil stabilizers on the market, Perma-Zyme’s effectiveness depends on how much clay is on location. Now, someone who knows what they’re looking for can just grab a handful of soil, add a little water, and know instantly whether or not the soil has clay. The problem was that most of our customers couldn’t do that, instead they had to send their soil to a geotech firm to get tested, which could take more time away from the sale closing.

The Solution

We created this test kit to shorten our closing time, giving new users the confidence to move forward with a sample purchase to test out on their road. We started with an idea to create stickers to add to an acrylic sheet, but after crunching the numbers on that cost it wasn’t worth it. So instead, we landed on this matte coated thick sheet that could withstand a significant amount of water. It’s a guided “plasticity test” for soil, walking the user through how to test their soil by themselves. This project was really fun for me, as it involved a lot of physical testing and illustration.
